Committed to Protecting your Privacy

The Canadian cable industry is committed to protecting the privacy of all of its customers. For many years the industry has adhered to standards of confidentiality for customer information, which have been enforced by the Cable Television Standards Council. The Council is an industry self-regulatory body that handles service issues customers have not been able to resolve directly with their cable companies.

On January 1, 2001 a new federal privacy law, The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, came into effect. This Law will ensure that all Canadians dealing with private sector organizations under federal jurisdiction have access to any of their personal information held by these organizations and that such information will not be disclosed without their consent. The cable industry has participated in the development of this new law and fully supports the principles it embodies. The industry has also developed its own sectoral privacy code to give effect to the law and to ensure its implementation by individual cable companies. You can obtain a copy of this code from the Canadian Cable Television Association (CCTA) or the Cable Television Standards Council (CTSC). As a customer of a CCTA member cable company, you can be assured that any personal information you provide to the company is:

  1. Required in order to provide you with current or future cable services,
  2. Used only for the purposes for which it has been requested,
  3. Safeguarded within the company to avoid unauthorized disclosure, and
  4. Will not be shared outside the cable company without your permission.

You can access any personal information the cable company holds on you, verify its accuracy and seek changes where appropriate. Each cable company will have a designated Privacy Coordinator to assist customers with requests and provide information. If you are not completely satisfied with the response you receive from your cable company, you can raise the issue with the Cable Television Standards Council who will intervene with the cable company to resolve any dispute. The Council can be reached at:
